What Is an RGN Trailer? The Heavy Haul Workhorse Explained

An RGN (Removable Gooseneck) trailer is a specialized heavy haul trailer with a detachable front section that drops to ground level, allowing heavy equipment to be driven or winched directly onto the deck. It is the most commonly used trailer type for oversized construction and industrial equipment transport.

How an RGN Trailer Works

The "gooseneck" is the curved front section of the trailer that connects to the fifth wheel of the semi-truck. On a standard flatbed or step-deck trailer, this section is fixed. On an RGN trailer, the gooseneck detaches — the front of the trailer drops to ground level, forming a loading ramp.

This removable design serves one key purpose: allowing tall equipment like excavators, cranes, and bulldozers to drive directly onto the deck without needing a separate ramp truck. Once loaded, the gooseneck reattaches and locks, and the equipment sits on the low main deck for transport.

RGN vs. Step-Deck vs. Flatbed — Key Differences

Trailer Type Deck Height Best For Legal Cargo Height
Flatbed ~5 ft Steel, lumber, machinery, wide loads ~8.5 ft
Step-Deck ~3.5 ft (lower deck) Mid-height equipment, skid steers, small dozers ~10 ft
RGN ~18–24 in (main deck) Excavators, cranes, tall heavy equipment ~11.5–12 ft

What Equipment Ships on an RGN Trailer?

RGN trailers are the preferred choice for:

  • Excavators (all sizes, including large crawler excavators)
  • Mobile cranes and all-terrain cranes
  • Large bulldozers (D8, D9, D10 class and up)
  • Wheel loaders and motor graders
  • Mining and drilling equipment
  • Industrial generators and transformers

RGN Weight Capacity

A standard 3-axle RGN trailer can legally carry approximately 40,000–45,000 lbs of cargo. For heavier loads, additional axle groups (called jeep axles and booster axles) are added to the front and rear of the trailer, increasing the legal weight limit. Multi-axle heavy haul RGN configurations can carry 80,000–150,000+ lbs depending on state permit allowances.

Do RGN Loads Require Oversize Permits?

Yes, in most cases. RGN trailers are used precisely because the cargo exceeds standard legal dimensions — which means oversize and often overweight permits are required. The specific permits depend on the load dimensions, weight, and the states being crossed. As a freight broker, HTS Logistics handles all permit applications in-house.
