Mobile cranes are usually transported in their travel configuration on RGN or multi-axle lowboy trailers. Depending on height and weight, oversize permits and pilot cars are required. Some cranes require partial disassembly of the boom.

Crawler cranes must be disassembled into multiple loads: the carbody (tracks and car body), the upperworks (cab and slewing ring), and the boom sections. Each piece ships on separate trailers and requires coordinated permits.

Crane shipments almost always require oversize and overweight permits. Superloads (typically over 150,000 lbs or very wide loads) require advance route surveys and can take 5–10 business days to permit in some states.

Yes. Most crane loads exceed dimensions requiring pilot cars. Wide loads over 14 feet typically need at least one escort. Loads over 16 feet wide or over certain length thresholds require front and rear pilot car escorts.
