Can heavy haul trucks deliver inside Chicago?
Yes, but not every way in is open. Cook County expressways are closed to loads wider than 12 ft, taller than 13 ft 6 in or heavier than 120,000 lb except on four corridors: I-80 east of I-57, I-290 north of I-294, I-57 south of 159th Street and I-55 south of exit 277. City streets also need City of Chicago permission, and the Tollway issues its own permit.

What makes Illinois heavy haul different?
Heavy haul trucking in Illinois splits into two jobs. Getting into or across Chicagoland means working with four road owners: IDOT, Cook County, the City of Chicago and the Illinois Tollway. Downstate, on I-55, I-57, I-74 and I-80, a load needs no escort until it is over 14 ft 6 in wide, a higher first-escort width than any state we cover except Minnesota, which waits until 15 ft.
Illinois has the second-largest pool of interstate for-hire carriers listing machinery or large objects, 4,214, behind only Texas, and it is unusually for-hire: those carriers are about half of the 8,307 active Illinois carriers that list machinery, against 23.5% nationally (FMCSA census, pulled October 17, 2026). Cargo types are self-reported on the MCS-150, so the count is an upper bound on trailers that can carry a dozer, not a list of them.
As the broker on the move (MC 1178470, East Northport, New York), we book the carrier and confirm two IDOT insurance points before dispatch: $500,000 of liability per occurrence for the load once it is over 10 ft wide, 13 ft 6 in high, 110 ft long or overweight, and the same $500,000 for every escort vehicle. Illinois does not certify escort drivers, so that insurance is what we verify for escorts.
How does an oversize load get into Chicago?
A load over those Cook County limits has four ways in; every other Cook County expressway is closed to it (IDOT OPER 993):
- I-290 north of I-294
- I-57 south of US 6 (159th Street)
- I-55 south of exit 277
- I-80 from I-57 east to Indiana, including the shared stretches of I-94 and I-294
Off the expressways, more road owners come in. City of Chicago streets, inside and outside the Central Business District (Cermak Road to Division Street, Halsted Street to Lake Michigan), need City of Chicago permission and run on city travel times, while IDOT's travel times govern state routes inside the city. For Cook County roads outside the city, the Cook County Permit Office (312-603-1670) gives the permission. IDOT's documents list two numbers for the city permit office, 312-744-4699 and 312-744-4696, so the contact is confirmed before the request goes in.
Wider loads also get a shorter day in the metro. When IDOT applies the provision on the permit, a load wider than 14 ft 6 in but no wider than 16 ft may move only 9 AM–3 PM on weekdays in Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, McHenry and Will counties, and in Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties across the river from St. Louis; over 16 ft wide or 17 ft high, that window applies statewide.
An articulated truck shows how the layers stack. A Cat 745 ships 12 ft 6 in wide and rides roughly 14 ft 4 in high on the trailer, assuming a 2 ft deck: IDOT needs no escort for it, but no Cook County expressway outside the four corridors will take it, and on the Illinois Tollway, which issues its own permit only after the IDOT permit number exists, it counts as a superload. Machines can also clear customs in the city. Census recorded $107.7 million of dozers, excavators and loaders and $68.3 million of harvesting machinery at the Port of Chicago in 2025, 14th among U.S. ports for both, and virtually none of it arrived by ship (Census Bureau, pulled October 17, 2026). The pickup is an inland address, such as a rail ramp, yard or warehouse, so send that address and its loading hours with the request.
What about Peoria, Bloomington-Normal and downstate runs?
Peoria sits on I-74, which meets I-55 and I-39 at Bloomington-Normal, and I-80 crosses the north of the state through Joliet. Peoria County is not on the nine-county list above, so the 9 AM–3 PM limit for 14 ft 6 in to 16 ft wide loads does not apply there unless a load is over 16 ft wide or 17 ft high.
Illinois sets travel hours by size. The smallest tier (14 ft 6 in wide, 15 ft high, 200 ft long at most) moves from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset, seven days a week. The middle tier, to 16 ft wide and 17 ft high, moves in weekday daylight and on Saturday until noon, never on Sunday; bigger loads run 9 AM–3 PM on weekdays only. A load no wider than 12 ft, no taller than 13 ft 6 in and no longer than 200 ft can even run at night with one extra civilian escort, which suits a Cat 320, 10 ft 5 in wide as shipped.
Farm machinery shows where the line falls. A John Deere S790 combine with the header off is 12 ft 11 in wide, comfortably under the width trigger, but its loaded height, about 15 ft 4 in with a 2 ft deck, is over 14 ft 6 in, so Illinois wants one civilian escort, with a height pole on the lead car, and the combine moves on weekdays and Saturday mornings only. The Cat 745 from the Chicago example, by contrast, travels downstate with no escort, seven days a week.
Two downstate limits to plan for: until December 1, 2026, I-24 at the Kentucky line takes nothing wider than 10 ft 6 in, and counties, townships and IDOT may post lower weight limits for up to 90 days a year when thaw or rain threatens the road (625 ILCS 5/15-316).
Illinois permit rules in four lines
- Legal height is 13 ft 6 in on any Illinois highway; width tops out at 8 ft 6 in.
- The first civilian escort comes over 14 ft 6 in wide or high, or over 110 ft long.
- IDOT's Permit Office issues state-highway permits through ITAP; the Tollway, Cook County roads, Chicago streets and other local roads each need their own permission.
- Over-dimension trip fees run $12 to $125 by size and distance band, and overweight loads add a fee for each 45-mile band.

Chicago and Illinois heavy haul questions
Does HTS Logistics have a Chicago office or trucks?
No. We broker Illinois loads from East Northport, New York (MC 1178470), and own no trucks or yards in Illinois. For a Chicago move we book an Illinois or out-of-state carrier with the right trailer and insurance, and the carrier or its permit service obtains the IDOT, Tollway, Cook County and City of Chicago permissions the route needs.
Should a wide load use the Illinois Tollway?
Under 12 ft wide it can, with a $15 Tollway fee per over-dimension category on top of the IDOT permit. Past 12 ft of width, or 145 ft of length, 14 ft 6 in of height, 25,000 lb on any axle or 120,000 lb gross, the Tollway files the load as a superload: $150 and at least 3 business days' notice. It may also turn away loads over 10 ft wide at construction zones, so for wide loads we plan the IDOT route first.
What should I send to quote a delivery in Chicago?
The exact delivery address and whether it is inside the Central Business District, the receiving hours, the machine's make and model or its measured size and weight, and your dates. The address tells us which of IDOT, Cook County, the City of Chicago and the Tollway must approve the route, and whether one of the four expressway corridors reaches the site.
How does a heavy load get from Chicago to the St. Louis area?
The direct Interstate is I-55, which a big load can use inside Cook County only south of exit 277 and which runs past Joliet, Bloomington-Normal and Springfield to the Metro East. Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties sit on the same metro list as Cook, so a load over 14 ft 6 in wide may be held to 9 AM–3 PM on weekdays at that end of the trip too.
Do you pick up auction purchases in Illinois?
Yes, including machines bought through Ritchie Bros or IronPlanet and rentals from Cat Rental. Share the lot or rental number, the yard's address and its loading hours, and the machine model. In the Chicago and Metro East counties, a load over 14 ft 6 in wide can be limited to 9 AM–3 PM on weekdays when IDOT applies that provision, so the pickup is timed to it.
