Oversize Load Permits by State

Fees, permit portals, escort widths and travel hours for 48 states, checked October 2026

Quick answer

What is an oversize load permit, and who issues it?

It is one state's permission to move a single load that is over its legal size or weight, on a set route and for a set number of days. Every state the load crosses issues its own; all 48 below take applications online. Their fee for the smallest single-trip permit runs from $5 in Florida to $75 in Ohio, and width and weight push it higher.

Updated November 2026 by the HTS Logistics broker team (FMCSA MC# 1178470).

The table covers 48 states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts around our Long Island office, and 43 more, from Maine and Florida to Washington and California. Sort it by height, fee or escort width, then open a state for its full rules. Each figure was checked against the state's own documents in October 2026; on the road, the conditions printed on the issued permit control. To test one load against all 48 states at once, use the oversize load checker.

Oversize load regulations by state

Without a permit, a load can be 8 ft 6 in wide in all 48 states. They part ways on height, trailer length, fees, escorts and the hours a permitted load may move. Select a column heading to sort.

Width is 8 ft 6 in (102 in) on each state's truck network; off it, some states allow only 8 ft, among them New Jersey, Michigan, Kentucky and West Virginia, and so do New York City streets. Fee: the state's own fee for its smallest single-trip oversize permit at legal weight, with the add-ons in the cell; toll roads and cities charge separately. Checked October 2026; the issued permit controls.

Axle weights, overall length rules and the 2026 holiday dates are on legal load limits by state. Escort counts past the first one, height poles and police escorts are on pilot car requirements by state.

How much does an oversize permit cost?

Thirteen of these states charge one flat fee for a routine single trip: New Hampshire $6 for any oversize permit, with weight priced separately; California $16; North Dakota $20 plus a $10 service fee ($8 in older policies); Nevada $25; Georgia and South Carolina $30 each; Kansas, Massachusetts and New York $40 each, as does Rhode Island by statute (its rule still says $20); Connecticut $42 with its transmittal fee; Vermont $48; and Kentucky $60, which a filed amendment would raise to $120. The other 35 raise the fee with width, weight or distance.

One machine, 31 permit fees

Take one load: a Cat 320 excavator, which Caterpillar lists at 10 ft 5 in wide and 49,800 lb operating weight, on a six-axle tractor and RGN (removable gooseneck) trailer that bring it to about 89,800 lb gross (the machine plus about 40,000 lb of rig). These are the fees in the 31 states whose published schedules price it from its size, gross weight, axle count and miles alone, each for 100 miles at legal height and length, before toll roads, city permits or escorts:

State permit fee for one Cat 320 load of about 89,800 lb, 100 miles in each state
State State permit fee How it is figured
California $16 Flat fee for any single trip, whatever the size, weight or miles
Alabama $20 Flat fee for a load over width, height or length plus weight, up to 100,000 lb; no mileage charge
Wisconsin $20 Overweight permit up to 90,000 lb, which also covers the width
North Carolina $24 $12 each for the width and the weight; no added charge until 132,000 lb
Nevada $25 Flat five-day permit fee; Nevada publishes no per-mile or weight fee
South Dakota $25 $25 single trip; the 2-cent ton-mile charge starts above 90,000 lb on six axles
Georgia $30 Flat fee up to 16 ft wide, 16 ft high and 150,000 lb
Maryland $30 $30 up to 45 tons (90,000 lb) under Transp. 24-112(b) and SHA's schedule; COMAR starts the $5-a-ton charge above 40 tons instead
New Mexico $30 $25 + 2.5 cents x 2 units of 2,000 lb over New Mexico's 86,400 lb legal gross x 100 miles
North Dakota $30 $20 single trip plus the $10 service fee (older NDHP policies say $8); no weight charge until 150,000 lb
South Carolina $30 Flat single-trip fee; width fees start over 16 ft and weight fees over 130,000 lb
Illinois $35 88,001–100,000 lb band on six axles; 100 miles falls in the 90–135 mile step, and width up to 4 ft over legal is included
Iowa $35 Flat single-trip fee; an overweight permit may also carry single-trip registration at $4 a ton over 40 tons
Florida $36 $0.27 a mile x 100 miles + $3.33, rounded up to $31, plus the $5 transmission fee; no dimension fee at this width
Kansas $40 Flat single-trip fee; one permit covers the width and the weight, with no mileage charge
Massachusetts $40 Flat fee for a non-divisible load over any limit
New York $40 Flat; no weight or mileage charge
Rhode Island $40 Flat statutory fee, before the $4.50 online processing charge; the 2002 rule still lists $20
Connecticut $42 $30 plus the $12 transmittal fee; no weight charge under 200,000 lb
Virginia $50 $20 + 30 cents a mile x 100 miles for an overweight load
Indiana $55 $20 base + 35 cents a mile x 100 miles, up to 108,000 lb
New Jersey $59.25 $20 base (oversize and overweight) + $25 (5 x $5 for 9,800 lb over) + $12 + 5% of $45
Kentucky $60 Flat single-trip fee, before the 4% card or $3 ACH charge; a filed amendment would raise it to $120
Utah $60 Flat fee for an oversize and overweight load up to 125,000 lb
Pennsylvania $65.60 $46 + 4 cents x 4.9 tons over x 100 miles, if the rig is registered at 80,000 lb
Louisiana $67.50 Five or more axles, 80,001–100,000 lb, 51–100 miles; the overweight permit covers the width at no extra fee
Tennessee $69.40 $20 width + $20 weight + 6 cents x 4.9 tons over 80,000 lb x 100 miles; each category is charged separately
Arizona $75 Class A overweight fee, which also covers the width
Colorado $90 $30 + $10 for each of the 6 axles
Ohio $145 $20 base + $125 overweight surcharge, which also covers the width
Texas $210 $60 + $150 maintenance fee for 80,001–120,000 lb

Left out because the schedule alone does not settle this load's fee:

  • Arkansas: the rules do not say whether a load over width and weight needs one $17 permit or two.
  • Delaware: the manual does not say whether a load over width and weight takes one $30 permit or an oversize and an overweight permit.
  • Idaho: off the Interstate its legal gross runs to 105,500 lb, so the fee is $30, or $33 plus a road use fee, depending on the route.
  • Maine: a 3-axle tractor with a tri-axle trailer is legal to 100,000 lb under Maine's own limits but 80,000 lb under the Interstate limits, so the fee is $6 (width only) or $8 (width and weight) depending on the route.
  • Michigan: the fee is $15 or $50 depending on whether the axles meet its axle-spacing limits.
  • Minnesota: overweight permits add a damage fee for each over-legal axle group, so the fee needs the axle weights.
  • Mississippi: legal gross is 80,000 lb only on red-line highways (57,650 lb on the rest), and MDOT does not say whether the $10 size fee is added to the per-mile weight charge.
  • Missouri: the $20 charge for each 10,000 lb over legal gross does not say how a part of a step counts.
  • Montana: it has no fixed 80,000 lb gross cap, so whether this load pays only the $10 oversize fee or an overweight fee too depends on its axle spacing.
  • Nebraska: off the Interstate the bridge table allows up to 95,000 lb, so the fee is $15 or $25 depending on the route.
  • New Hampshire: it does not say whether a load over both size and weight pays the $6 oversize fee on top of the weight fee.
  • Oklahoma: legal gross off the Interstate is 90,000 lb, so whether the $10-per-1,000 lb charge applies depends on the route.
  • Oregon: single-trip non-divisible permits owe a road use assessment fee per equivalent single-axle load mile on top of the $8 permit fee, so the fee needs the axle weights.
  • Vermont: the statute charges $48 for each overweight, overwidth, overlength or overheight permit and does not say whether a load over both width and weight needs one permit or two.
  • Washington: it has no flat 80,000 lb cap, so whether this load pays the $10 oversize fee or a per-mile overweight fee depends on its axle spacing and licensed weight.
  • West Virginia: the rule charges 4 cents per ton-mile for overweight loads without saying whether the tons are the excess or the whole gross.
  • Wyoming: its Interstate gross table runs to 117,000 lb, so whether this load pays only the $25 oversize fee or the overweight ton-mile charge too depends on its axle spacing.

The same machine costs $16 to permit in California and $210 in Texas. The gap is weight: the flat-fee states charge nothing for the 9,800 lb over 80,000, and Ohio and Texas charge the most for it. This is an illustration from published fee schedules, not a quote; escorts, police details, route surveys, crossings and the haul itself are priced, with dates and sources, in our heavy equipment transport cost guide.

What raises the fee

A wider load

  • Pennsylvania: $46 up to 14 ft wide, $97 above it.
  • Ohio: $75 one way, $145 once the load is over 14 ft wide or 14 ft 6 in high.
  • Florida: $5 up to 12 ft wide, $15 up to 14 ft, $25 beyond.
  • New Jersey: $1 for each foot, or part of one, over 14 ft wide, and the same over 63 ft long.
  • Illinois: five size tiers, from $12 (up to 10 ft wide, 90 miles or less) to $125 (over 18 ft wide, more than 270 miles).
  • Indiana: $20 up to 12 ft 4 in wide, 13 ft 6 in high and 95 ft long, $30 once any of them is exceeded.
  • Missouri: $15 plus a $250 movement feasibility fee once the load is over 16 ft wide, 16 ft high or 150 ft long.

A heavier load

  • Texas: a maintenance fee on top of the $60, from $150 up to 120,000 lb, rising in 40,000 lb steps to $375 over 200,000 lb.
  • Pennsylvania: 4 cents a mile for each ton over the truck's registered weight.
  • Ohio: $145 up to 120,000 lb, then 4 cents per ton per mile over 60 tons.
  • Florida: a rate per mile that climbs from $0.27 (up to 95,000 lb) to $0.47 (up to 162,000 lb).
  • Georgia: $30 to 150,000 lb, $125 to 180,000 lb and $500 above that.
  • Massachusetts: $300 a trip over 130,000 lb, with engineering calculations.
  • Connecticut: $2 per 1,000 lb over 200,000 lb.
  • Utah: $60 up to 125,000 lb; heavier loads pay 1.2 cents a mile for each 1,000 lb over 80,000, between $80 and $540 a trip.
  • Colorado: $30 plus $10 an axle, then $250 for a Chapter 6 Special (200,000 to 500,000 lb) and $800 for a Super Load.
  • Arkansas: $8 to $16 a ton over legal weight on top of the $17 base, rising with trip length.
  • New York and California: no weight charge. New York takes a bond from superloads instead, and California may bill engineering work on unusually heavy loads.

HTS arranges permits inside the move, not on their own

We are an FMCSA-licensed property broker (MC# 1178470), not a permit service, so we do not sell permits by themselves. When we book your load, the permits for every state, toll road and city on the route are arranged with the carrier we assign, scheduled around the pickup and priced into the quote.

Permits follow the truck and its insurance. Georgia wants the hauler's insurance certificate, with $1,000,000 of property damage cover, on file before it issues a permit; Ohio wants $500,000 of liability or surety on file; and Texas makes an applicant that is not a registered motor carrier file a $10,000 surety bond. Pennsylvania lets only the hauler, not a permit service, apply for a super load. If you already have a truck and only need the paper, the state portals are linked in the table above.

Two things add permits and lead time to a plan: a load past a state's superload line (a Georgia Mega Load of 300,000 lb or more needs its engineering submittals 30 business days ahead), and a route over a toll road or bridge that issues its own permit. Both are compared on our page of superload thresholds and toll-road permits. The steps from measurements to an issued permit are covered in how oversize permits work.

Is there a federal DOT oversize permit?

No. The U.S. DOT sets the limits for the Interstate and the National Network in 23 CFR 658, and that rule leaves permits to the states: under 658.15 each state may grant permits for vehicles wider than 102 in. A "DOT oversize permit" is the state DOT's, such as NYSDOT's, ordered in HOOCS, or PennDOT's in APRAS. In Texas the motor vehicles department, TxDMV, issues them in TxPROS, and in Wyoming and the Dakotas the Highway Patrol does.

How much does a wide load permit cost in California?

$16 for a Caltrans single-trip permit, whatever the width, weight or distance. It is valid for 7 days in one direction, can be issued up to 3 days ahead and is never refunded; annual and repetitive permits are $90. Caltrans covers state highways only, so city and county legs need local permits, and state law caps a local fee at the Caltrans fee (CVC 35795).

How much does an oversize truck permit cost in Illinois?

IDOT prices a legal-weight oversize trip by size tier and distance (625 ILCS 5/15-305): $12 for a load up to 10 ft wide traveling 90 miles or less, up to $125 for one over 18 ft wide traveling more than 270 miles. Overweight adds a fee for each 45-mile band. Loads past IDOT's practical maximums pay $50 plus 3.5 cents per ton-mile above legal weight, and the Illinois Tollway adds its own permit at $15 per over-dimension category.

How much does an overweight permit cost in Texas?

TxDMV charges $60 for a single trip plus a highway maintenance fee set by gross weight: $150 from 80,001 to 120,000 lb (total $210), $225 to 160,000 lb ($285), $300 to 200,000 lb ($360) and $375 above that ($435). Over 200,000 lb a supervision fee is added: $35 for a load within 254,300 lb and the axle limits with at least 95 ft of axle spacing, otherwise $500. Card payments add 25 cents plus 2.25%.

How do I get an overweight permit in New York?

Order it from NYSDOT in HOOCS, signing in through OSCAR with a USDOT number or with an NY.gov ID. A Type 1 single trip costs $40 with no weight charge and covers 5 permissible hauling days. It is good only on NYSDOT highways: the Thruway needs its own permit over 80,000 lb, also ordered in HOOCS, and New York City DOT issues a $35 permit for each leg into or out of the city.

What is a divisible overweight permit?

A permit to run over legal weight with a load that could be split, such as a farm load. Standard permits are for nondivisible loads (TxDMV's single-trip permit, for one), so divisible permits are separate programs: Connecticut sells annual divisible permits at $9 per 1,000 lb of permitted weight plus $12, Massachusetts charges $50 per 1,000 lb over the Federal Bridge Formula, and Illinois issues free permits from September 1 to December 31 for farm loads up to 10% over its limits, off the Interstate.
